Gender:

A variation in the form (typically the ending) of a word to denote its classification with respect to sex: masculine, feminine, or neuter. While gender is preserved in English only in the third person pronoun (he, she, it) and in a few gender-specific nouns (actor and actress, prince and princess), it is used extensively in Greek. The gender of certain nouns (man, woman, son, daughter) matches the natural gender of the noun, but for the most part this classification is arbitrary and shows no direct correspondence to natural gender.
